Event Information
- Description
-
This class is an introduction to rigging and sailing the 420s.
The International 420 Dinghy is a twi-person sailboat that's popular for racing and teaching. Henry Kies, one of our sailing instructors, will be teaching this class. He will show members how to rig it, sail it and unrig. You might get wet, so prepare for that also.
-
Design
The 420 has a fiberglass hull with internal buoyancy tanks, a Bermuda rig, spinnaker, and optional trapeze. It's designed to plane easily and has a large sail-area-to-weight ratio. The name refers to the boat's length of 420 centimeters (13 ft 9 in).
-
Features
The 420 is stable and can be rigged to be sailed single-handed. It's also known for its speed and is often used by schools and colleges for training and team racing.
-
Skills
Sailing a 420 can help sailors develop skills in two-person disciplines, such as teamwork, rigging, sail theory, and right-of-way rules. Many of the world's top sailors have sailed in the 420 before moving on to other classes.
