Adult Beginner 1 Sailing Course

Embark on your sailing journey with our "Adult Beginner 1" course, ideal for newcomers to the sport or those returning after a hiatus. From your very first session, you'll experience the thrill of setting sail, guided by our expert instructors. This course offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

What You Will Learn:

  • Nautical Terminology: Immerse yourself in the language of sailing, understanding key terms and their applications.
  • Knot Tying: Master essential knots including the Cleat Hitch, Figure Eight, Square Knot, and the versatile Bowline.
  • Rigging and De-rigging: Gain hands-on experience in setting up and dismantling a sailboat.
  • Docking Skills: Learn the techniques of casting off and safely returning to the dock.
  • Maneuvering: Practice essential maneuvers such as heading up, heading down, coming about, and jibing.
  • Sailing Techniques: Understand and execute sailing with a mainsail including close reach, beam reach, broad reach, sailing up wind & downwind.
  • Wind Awareness: Develop skills to sail efficiently by making small adjustments at the tiller or by shifting your weight. 

Course Structure:

The course integrates shore-based theoretical lessons with on-water practice. On land, you'll engage in interactive sessions to learn the day's lesson, preparing you for the practical application. Once on the water, you'll focus on building muscle memory and honing your skills through guided practice.

Course Goal:

This course prepares you for the Helmsman Test. This is the first certification that allows you to sail with guests in the boat and out of sight of the boathouse.
